I wander over to the windows to look out at the garden. Brilliant-red Virginia creeper is growing over brick walls, and in the center there’s a small sundial. It looks like a nice place to rest and gather your thoughts.

“Maela?” a deep voice, resonant as a brass bell, inquires behind me.

I turn and all of the breath goes out of me. Hot men are like busses, I can only think inanely. You wait and wait and wait, and then three come along all at once. He’s tall, taller than Emlyn or Jorge, and solid, but without an ounce of fat on him. Ink-black hair feathers round an oval face, dominated by an aquiline nose and dark eyebrows. He has a short, thick beard and moustache and white, even teeth in a smiling, full-lipped mouth. Most remarkable are his eyes, a pale jade-green, striking against the warm cinnamon of his skin. They’re clear as a tide pool under the summer sun. Through his loose, open-necked shirt, I can see smooth, well-defined pecs, and his arms are heavily muscled. He gives the impression of strength held in check, a hard-won calm.
